To make cloud rain?

Have heard and read enough on the benefits of cloud: DR, Scalable and Higher uptime and OPEX rather than CAPEX form of investment.
But encountering the IT cloud so closely makes me realizes that not all cloud rain. What we need to make a watery, dense and effective cloud is stronger execution and meticulous planning.
Remember not all cloud rain…
Especially when the migration to cloud is for an application that is critical to organization, we need to be extra cautious for the whole thing and few of important out of these are,
1. Load testing: In the name of testing, we test all the functionalities, work-flows and intended functionalities even with good number of concurrent users and load to system. However, what we need to ensure that system is tested on maximum load and configured to handle the worst scenario in term of concurrency and volume of transactions.
2. Rollback Plan: In the hoo-haah of cloud, we forget the reverse direction that what if migration strategy doesn’t work. In general, it has to be part of migration-plan but rollback plan is need to be reviewed very closely. It should have clear approach to rollback along with time-wise activities. Apart from strategy, organization has to clear about RTO and RPO (Recovery Time/Point Objective) in case it is required to rollback.
3. Service Level Agreement with Cloud Provider: During migration and post-migration, organization should review the contract and understand the responsibility in case something does not work during migration. What will be estimated time of resolution in case of any escalation and who will be the contact point for issues? Furthermore, role and responsibility should be clearly defined for internal and external team.
4. Communication to Stakeholders: Not to forget that users of system should be aware of the move. They should not caught in surprise when they might have to change some sort of DNS or browser setting in order to work normally. Users should be notified for downtime and alarmed to gear-up in case of change in their normal functioning.

Thinking cloud does rain but just require you need to create right atmosphere to make it shower.

IT:: Enabler or Driver

The another trivia (apart from 'IT does not matter') that continuously bothers me is: IT is an enabler or mere a facilitator for an organization.

Though there is no clear answer but still I feel that judgment will depend on the role of the IT-function and people behind it.

Many companies (and so their employees) feel that IT is synonymous to Helpdesk, a place for electronic gadgets as laptops, PC, networks and application availability. In such places, IT remains occupied with operational tasks and this eventually results in an IT-group which just takes orders from other business groups of organization and strategic quotient of IT-function remains low. So IT limits itself to a FACILITATOR executing orders and meeting expectations set by business users.

However, there is another state of being IT as visionary. It requires capable IT people with deep understanding of organization processes and futuristic goals who can create new offerings unleashing the unlimited power of IT. Such capable set of people come out of operational tasks and create business opportunities not only by saving costs but also by reducing time to market, by shortening the credit cycle and by targeting new potential customers. This state of IT requires visionary thinking, dreaming power and detailed understanding of organization processes.

Anytime, it is easier to be an enabler than to be a driver. Think where you are and where team is. If you are just an enabler then it’s never late to transition to be a driver.

IT Sales: What matters

I have been dealing with IT vendors and multiple proposals on different context from an IT office so thought of jotting down some of my learning in the benefits of bigger mass.

One thing that we underestimate being in an IT-company side, is the role of SCM in the key project decisions. SCM is one of the most powerful entities in any investment decisions from enhancements to any green-field investment decision. Without convincing Supply-chain, it is not easy to move a decision forward even a most important strategic decision.

Second important thing is the buy-in from all the affected parties. In non-IT organizations, IT remains as a facilitator (Reminds me of famous ‘IT doesn’t matter’ from Nicholas G Carr’) and draws decisions based on the requirements from other business groups. And many of times, when we took concerns of one business group into account, second business group seemed their ‘as-is’ getting changed and project ended no-where.

Thirdly, a good proposal should have third party references. More known the customer of reference, higher the convincing quotient of a proposal. The outside reference helps clients to draw an analogy and justifiability of the project. Many a times, clients think as our competitor has it so we should have too or something better than this.

And finally, thing which is most important is derivation of ROI for projects. In general, it is not easy to derive the cost-benefits in commercial terms for an IT project. But for a stronger push, a proposal should have estimation for ROI and pay-back period. It could be on basis of some of the assumptions like expected reduction or intended benefits.

I guess, keeping these points in view will help a proposal rolling on the top-management board.

Daily morning, I create a 'Priority List' for me at work.
Irony: It remains valid till I meet my boss.

I jot down the points which I target to discuss with boss.
Irony: Boss talks everything except that I jot down.

I work during the weekends and deliver the expectations set on Fridays.
Irony: On Mondays, boss thinks there was something else that was in his expectation.

I note down the tasks assigned and complete them.
Irony: Boss finds earlier ones irrelvant and creates new ones to target.

Being the largest tower company, we assumed towers to be at the core of our business which drives us to create a touch and feel layer through multiple mode automation and instrumentation. We engaged IBM for asset tracking using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) in Karnataka circle which was successfully completed for 100 sites and presented to top-management.
The asset-monitoring solution is extendable to Site-access management, temperature sensors and diesel monitoring and so an integral part of Smart Tower framework.

The current solution and Indus vision was presented by a team of Chakrapani Perangur, Aishwarya Kachhal and Pranit Prakash in the ‘The Great Mind Challenge for Business Award (TGMC)’ organized by IBM. The nomination was evaluated by a team of respectable panelist from Academia, Industry and Media and at the next stage, Indus got the chance to present the case along with other competitors like Reliance Infrastructure, CRIS (Central Railway Information System), Punjab National Bank, Star Alliance Group and Bharti Airtel.
The presentation was widely appreciated by the judges and present dignitaries. Impact of our case can be known from the fact that our presentation was allowed for double the allotted time to answer the queries and present the extension of ‘Smart Planet’ concept of IBM.
Among the 130+ nominations across the categories, Indus Towers was selected as ‘The Most Strategic Enterprise’ and felicitated at IBM Software Universe, a premier Software Group event held in Mumbai.

Ye Dilli hai meri jaan...

'Ye Dilli hai meri jaan'....These are the words which I often happen to use consoling my wife when she starts complaining about the city and starts comparing Delhi with Pune.
It’s my shortcut to end the discussion without disagreement. Anyway, we have to come to terms of Delhi.
There is nothing new about Delhi especially when I had heard a lot about it. I had a short stint with city when I transitioned from my core-student life after Engineering to corporate world. But the interaction then was quite narrow and l was mostly limited to my books except some core needs.
Many of the things that I could easily differentiate now with other cities where I lived in before:
1. No place to park not even for cars but also for bikes.
2. At bus-stop and common crossings, it seems that a population explosion had taken place...truely JANSANKHYA VISFOT...
3. Every second or third car on the road has a scratch or dent or some sort of shape-deformation.
4. More number of long cars and fewer bikes on roads
5. Normal people looking for opportunities to boss over others ..a strange attitude...
6. Many a family covers share story of three states-where one of family member goes to Gurgaon and other to Noida while they live in Delhi. So it becomes story of three states: Delhi, Harayana and UP.
7. Metro Trains: the only beautiful part of public conveyance.
I believe that it’s easier to drain-down the energy and discharge your battery while you work here in comparison to working in other cities. Language is rougher than other metropolitans in India but people are smarter.

Definitely requires special buckle to tighten yourself if someone moves here….at least for people like me…

Online Advertisement Space: Mind boggling facts...

Well said, 'Only constant thing is "Change" ' and so is the Advertisement Space: from print to Radio to TV and now its time for Online Advertising.

With speeding proliferation and bottom-less depth to reach, its an area to watch...how?

Here are some of the facts that stirred me from top to bottom:

1. FICCI-KPMG study: Current Rs 780 Crore Online Advertising is going to grow 4-folds by 2014 to touch Rs 2580 Crore.

2. Ford has shifted 25% of total marketing budget to Internet-based avenues last year.

3. UK became first country where online advertising spend has crossed TV advertisement spend. (wondering who is going to be next)

4. Users spend 9.5 hours average on media in which 34% account for TV and 28% on Internet. Remaining time is spent on Newspaper on magazine. This 28% on Internet is growing at a maximum rate especially in a country like India.

Very recent examples:

IPL: 2-year agreement with Google for on-demand access of IPL matches live through youtube.
The torch-bearers of FMCG, Pepsi and Coke are the major players in Online Advertisement arena.
And finally IT, Telecom and BFSI players that are increasing their pie allocated to Internet-based medium to reach customers and targeting stronger and more-customized impact on the customers.

So watch out....things are changing.....we got to change too......

Industry Masters Strategy

First of all: What is Industry Masters?

It’s an Entrepreneurial Simulation Game especially designed for MBA-students and Business Training purpose. (Something like Capstone if you know about it)

Our group (xlri-1) consisting of Ankit, Anshuman, Pranit, Vinay and Xavier finished FIRST in Industry-Masters today.

Many would say: “Not a big deal, it was our day and we were lucky.”

Might be Yes and might be No.

‘Yes’ because everything required a bit of luck and ‘No’ because we had a clear strategy and we are sure to repeat the success again using the same strategy given a similar customization of simulation.

We thought of sharing the lessons through this post (before we forget):

1. The selection of Industry was very important and we focused on acquiring different verticals of one Industry.

(Like for us it was ‘S/W Testing’, ‘App Dev and Maintenance’ and ‘Technology Infrastructure’ of INSURANCE Industry.)

2. Select a vertical from where you can expect maximum revenue in starting and later you can go to verticals which will be valuable for later stage. Think in REAL WORLD scenario.

(Like for us ‘Application Dev and Maintenance’ which we thought of most profit-making for initial stage. S/W Testing would be a vertical choice for later.)

3. We targeted to minimize the short-term debts by maximizing the long-term debts. It helped us in reducing the high Interest charges.

4. For Strategic Positioning (as Customer Decisions, TQM Product Quality, R&D and HR/Training), we followed incremental investment approach and at every stage we improved positioning in these areas.

5. Most of our marketing and pricing decisions were based on our Utilization-rate, Average Market Price and competitors previous round performance.

6. And finally, the most critical factor which went in our favor was to conserve cash for targeted vertical investment that is untouched by competitors.

It costed us NOT investing in expansion options and some Additional Investments to do later.

We targeted to operate in all the four verticals for Insurance-Industry.

Along with this we used extra generated cash for buying remaining ‘Additional Investments’ (KM-system, ISO, Global Delivery and CoE) but those were never a priority.

It was very important to check the Supply-level and target the vertical which was still not touched by others.

Slowly investing in ‘Strategic Investment’ keeps your cost going down and helps you to consolidate the market share as it helped us to finish at top in last four rounds consecutively.

Hope it will help the future players of Industry Masters.

The term came while a session with our guest speaker, Mr Harsh Shrivastava VP, Reliance Capital.

He quoted that how Infosys in 1990s made its Brand so strong that any of the employee (of course only unmarried guys) was able to clear the MIL-test.

(Among the preferred lists of prospective Mother-In-Laws)

This could be done through effective Corporate Brand-Building and thus establish the need of Communications for companies, organizations and Institutes.

What makes you proud....

Recently, during one of workshop: we were asked for sharing the thing which makes you feel the proud.

I never thought about it and really I could n't locate any achievement from my profile which I could brag about. (It does not mean that I don't have any) :-)

I could have talked about my CSR-work or I could have talked about one of critical projects that brought some appreciations...but I was not sure that thinking about them really makes me feel distinct....

Then what?? Nothing....

But really not...

I feel proud of being what I am. I feel proud of doing things to show the way to younger ones in my family. Having no-Engineers in our family till some-time back, I was the first one to get into a top-Engineering college (though not an IIT :( ..), I was the first one to travel to abroad, I was the first one who did go to a B-School and finally I was the first one who himself found the gal to marry...

So I feel proud of these. Though I am not the best but I could create a roadmap for my juniors in family who can look towards me for their progression.......

(And I feel proud of these younger guys who are doing so well to create milestones for me...)

As 'Beer and Diaper' phenomena (discussed in MIS class), there was another striking story came in class (this time it was Strategic Marketing class):

Mohans had to run its plant 4-shifts to meet demand of Kelloggs Cornflakes Indian market

An example of 'Second Mover Advantage' from marketing class:

How:

1. Kelloggs (termed Pioneer in Marketing concepts) created market of Cornflakes in India.

2. It took years of Kelloggs marketing efforts to change (even little) Indian breakfast preference over Paratha, Idly and VadaPav to Cereals.

3. It must be a time to reap the first mover advantage for Kellogg in Indian Market.

4. Mohans (termed 'Early Follower' in Marketing concepts) introduced a cheaper version of cereals to reap the new market.

5. Indian Customers asked for cornflakes in shops but not Kelloggs but Mohans (price-sensitivity).

6. To meet higher demand of Mohans cereals: Mohans had to run its cereal plant 4-shifts in a day.

So which strategy do you vouch for: a) Blue Ocean (Kelloggs') or b) Used Apple (Mohans')

I wonder: how different will be it to experience something unexpected without getting affected...

I know the last part of previous line is very important and I also know that such type of statement is kiddish but being a kid is not wrong as well...

What a day, gosh.....

Started day at 6 am from Lille on TGV, one of the few bullet trains on the planet. It traversed a distance of more than 200 km to Paris in one hour.

Speed...Indian Rail needs to take a leaf out of TGV.

More wonderful is the fact that TGV was started recently and main reason behind starting TGV was to provide employment and kick-off an infrastructure project to pull country out of recession.

What an initiative...

Paris Garre-de-Nord: We bought unlimited train pass and then moved to La Louvre, a grand museum with famous pics of Monalisa, Milo and sculptures worth a watch. I am not a connoisseur of Art but I was wide mouth-opened on the existing stuff there.

One thing to note, French security is not as tough as US-securities. This is on basis of our many observations in last seven days.

Fine, then we walked down to arc-de-triumph. It was India-gate type of structure but here you can go up and have a nice glance of complete Paris. The street leading to Arc-de-triumph is known as Champ-ellisys and it is called heart of Paris.

Then we walked towards Eiffel(just following the Eiffel view) which we could see from roads. Earlier we thought it as just an iron structure and over-hyped but as soon as we reach there, it was breathtaking to behold.

However, we paused our exploration of Eiffel and we went to Seine cruise where tickets were available for Euro 11 trip and importance to say, it was the most wonderful part of trip. We could see, many bridges, architectures, notredom and other famous structures.

Plus the lit Eiffel which we could witness from cruise during our return trip was awesome. We realized why do people say Paris one of the most romantic place on the Earth.

We went up through stairs and then 8 pm, we could see the fantastic lighting event for 20 minutes.

Splendid...we got all the reasons of 23.5 million tourists coming to Paris every year...

If you have to opt to go for a city on the planet with your most-beloved one, this is the place to be.

Very true..very certain....Paris is something not comparable...

Reached Lille

We reached Paris on 9^th Nov (Monday) at 7 30 pm through Dubai. Dubai airport was beautiful (probably one of the most beautiful Airports that I have seen). Ironically, the custom-free bannered shops did not offer very attractive to us. Probably I was comparing things with US-prices as per my experience and so those did not invite me to shop. However, some of guys bought camera and some of us bought wine to ease their next fortnight stay.

On reaching La Paris, there was an easy clearance just to get a stamp on passport and after collecting luggage, we boarded the bus that was waiting for us outside Airport. Then the photo-sessions started.
I found a special attraction towards French words due to my past classes in French.

One thing is clear, though I learnt Spanish more recently, I am better in French. I got into mood of explaining things to people with me. (Hope I was not irritating though)

Anyway the drive on bus was not very new. The roads separated by lanes, fast moving cars and highways were similar to those of US. However, I could not see any MAMU (Police Cars) stopping the vehicles on over-speeding. Good positive change.

I really felt like driving a car on these but no, that’s not going to happen in this stay at least.

We reached Lille night 10 pm and somehow Kevin and our coordinator got McD burgers for us. Thankfully we survived for night. Initially we were shell-shocked on knowing the price of those as 15 Euro but thanks to his earlier-done wrong calculations, the total cost of meal came to 7 euros.

Next, we got up next day and got ready for first day classes. We had classes till 6 pm and then we had to go shopping some essentials.
Match is one of superstore like Walmart and the price is a bit higher than US-price. However everything less or more is similar to US. I again got déjà-vu feeling due to similarity between US and Europe basics. The major differences:

1. People have more thrust on Wine and enjoying life.

2. Wines are more easily available with huge variety.

3. The local country wine ‘KILL’ was wonderful. It gave me the sweet feeling of being drunk temporarily as I wanted.

4. People speak French and only French. However, when we searched for Salt, Sugar and my basic French vocabulary did not help me, then local people in store were helpful.

It is cold but we roamed a lot today in search of India-France plug converter. We got it in Carrford finally and we have a nice walk till the place. Lille is a beautiful city and true to be said on peak of culture.

Tomorrow, we are leaving for Brussels to visit EU-parliament. I will update you more.

CQAD: Compulsory Question Asking Disorder

How to avoid...:

1. Think if your question or doubt might be answered automatically in due session.

2. Think if your question is for common benefit of class. If not, please consider taking it offline(after class).

3. Think if by some search on web, you can get the answer of your question.

4. Don't create complex hypothetical conditions. It definitely shows your creativity but on the cost of time which can be used for better discussions.

Remember, we would like to listen the Prof more than you. So most importantly think, if you are benefiting others then please go ahead otherwise please resist yourself by countering CQAD.

Beer and Diaper

I never thought even in my dreams that how these two (Beer and Diapers) can be so much inter-related.

Referring to Data Mining lecture, it was famous observation made by Data-Miners especially from US-retailers.

Implementation of MIS and so possible Data-Mining helped the observed to establish the two facts:

1. The sale of Beer happens to be high on a weekend-start especially on Friday evenings. This could be well-understood as the weekend is the time to chill-out.

2. But most-importantly, along with the beer, on same time buyers also buy diaper. This phenomena was observed in the males between age of 23 to 30. (predicted to be young parents).

Specialists could give the following reasoning:

1. Friday night or weekend is the time when males tend to do baby-sitting and so they need diaper to ease their work and to enjoy the beer.

2. Because the packs of diaper are large, the females, who happens to be frequent purchases, leave the job of diaper-purchase to their male counterparts.

Usage:

1. Placing the beer and diaper next to each-other: Helped getting new customers who were not applying the same logic before and could do it now. (Cross-Selling)

2. Sale of Premium Beer by placing next to diaper place. Result: Better Targeting through high-profit products.

Sludge is generally used in not-appreciable ways...like to vilify someone...

Check the literal meaning:

SLUDGE on dictionary

However, it is not always so....you got to look on Canada to understand the value of SLUDGE.

You might wonder knowing that Canada has the world's second largest reserves of oil and most of it in in sludgy oil sands.

Then why do we not know about it?

Because it is a bit expensive extracting oil here and companies can make money only when oil price reaches $70 a barrel. With a break-even price of $70 per barrel, companies have put the oil-extraction in SLUDGE on the hold but mind it the oil-prices are rising again.

From last year low of $35, oil-prices are back in $70 zone and so attention is returning back to Canadian SLUDGE-reserves. Most recently, PetroChina has invested CAD$1.9 billion for 60% stake on these sludge oil-projects.

With the oil-prices holding steady or getting above the current mark and expected increase in demand, it will not be hard realizing the value of oil-reserves in the SLUDGE.

So tune your ears to hear more of this word in future....

Harvardization of GMP Term-2

While quest for MBA-admission, there used to be a big fuss around: Case-Based MBA and Team-based MBA.

When I applied to Richard Ivey School of Business, Western Ontario, Canada: I prepared my admission interview to support the case-based approach for MBA and similarly for Queens University (another top-1 year MBA program in North America), I prepared my interview around praising Team-Based MBA approach.

Frankly I was never sure which one is better?

Now at this stage, when I am nearly half-done for MBA, I realized that it can not be one superior than other but what we need is a MIXED approach of both.

We had our term-1 mostly based on Group-Projects and submissions. We struggled hard to avoid freeters and use the team-dynamics to add effectivity.

And now the term-2 is full of Cases (mostly from HBRs). Half of the term-2 is over and we have discussed or analysed or gone through more than 50 HBR cases. Most of the discussions are team-based when we prepare our presentation in group and come prepared for a discussion..

Advantages:

1. Real-World Scenario

2. Decision-Making Capabilities Check

3. Analysis Power Check

4. Team-Based Approach to know the different thought-process

Barring the overload, I feel this is the true mode of learning Management-Skills where we need to put a check on all the weapons required to counter the real-time business situations.

It was indeed a special evening with XLRI professors, GMPians and families. The welcomable readiness of profs to mix-up not only in term of chit-chat but taking the mike and showing the zeal to win in games charged the crowd....

Overall the party was a huge huge success, hats off to organizing committee and all of GMPian...way to go...

So we have End-Term for term-1, MBA starting from tomorrow and my stupidity, I am not able to resist writing about this movie..SHABD…

A not-so-new movie featuring Aishwarya, Sanjya Dutt and Jayed Khan…a very intriguing script. Although it has not done so well on box-office but we know what works well in Bollywood..

So what is so exclusive about Shabd:

The moment I start to think about the movie, I keep thinking and analyzing the about everything there..dont think I am insane doing so but I have talked to many of my intellectual friends and who have seen the movie..they love talking and discussing the movie…

The first time, when I completed watching the movie, I did not clearly understand but slowly the analysis of sequences, songs and story made me to fall in love …

There can not be a better way to understand the meaning and importance of Human Values in being a Manager than his classes.
Whatever it is: Writing an Obituary or Psychological Evaluation through a set of 32 questions or Time-Management or Johari Windows: Each of the word seems to be a step towards self-analysis and self-improvement.

Most of us have a ‘Cyrus Engineer’ within us, smaller or bigger.

Cyrus represents the dissatisfaction and dissolution within ourselves that keep us restless.
Desire to grow and prove oneself to others are some reasons of Cyrus getting larger in some of us.

So what's a solution to fight the Cyrus in us...I se either we adapt or surrender or fight.

Compromising with the handed decision of others, what most of the people around us do, will be ADAPT.
What Cyrus did…was SURRENDER…
and
What we are doing…that is joining GMP to upgrade..is FIGHT.

Those guys who scored HIGH(more than 120) in test designated to identify Cyrus, should be happy with the fact that..they have taken the third solution and that is to fight.

This is my analysis apart from all the great words given in one more interesting and intriguing class of "Managing Human Behavior"(MHB) by Prof Jittu Singh.

XL- Village Immersion Program

Even after with all the assignments, presentations and sudden quizzes, I am breaking the shackles of books to get some more time to blogging...
(so guys, dont disdain me if I dont belong to top-half of my batch..) :-)

Jokes apart...it was indeed a proud feeling as soon as we come out of 'Fathers Prabhu Hall'. I trust, there will be many others to share this feeling.

Details for Village Immersion and TSAF-adventure program were discussed by some of professors and concerned persons. The thing which impacted me most was the way, the senior profs were taking interest in getting the students on such programs.

The village immersion program, where we are supposed to go in villages with no electricity, no pure drinking water and with no mobile-signals. We have been asked to carry mosquito coils, waters, torch and other basic things. With mosquito coils and minimal things to sustain, it is going to be an experience to cherish. Churning the ideas, innovations and understanding the 70% market of India will definitely a milestone in creating a social entrepreneur out of us by keeping XLRI tradition long-lasting.
I wonder the unique methodology of enriching the students experience is common to other B-Schools. I am sure we do have Industry visit and team-building events, but such an idea, to contribute for nearby villages and learn from this contribution, is an unique way to teaching.

Kudos to XL for maintaining the tradition of being in top-most B-schools in India….

The very first Seven course meal of my life…

We were waiting for this day since the time; we were handed over GMP-schedule. But we never expected it to be so lavish.
Kudos to XLRI traditions and values, GMPians were welcomed with a dinner party as part of MCN-lab in curriculum. The guys dressed in formals or better to say in Managerial Attires reached MDP-Residence on schedule time and the party began with drinks.
First, Second and Third round of drinking..…..and then most of the guys had to stop…thanks to the mentor presence. Guys were sober or rather they did not have an option.
:-)

The tables were assigned and then the Seven-course of dinner begin. Thanks to my naivety, it was the very first time I was following the standards of Dining while the things were served one by one along with music in rhythm.
Thanks to Ankit (a flying Lieutenant from Indian Army) who guided the table through with his knowledge with lying knives, spoons and eating etiquettes.
The dish were amazing but more amazing was the way in which those were brought and served.
Learnt that it’s not starters, main course and deserts only but the other courses of a serving are missed by us in any regular party.
Great experience and wish to go through it once again…..

Why XLRI-GMP??

1. Great Culture: Indeed, XLRI one of the most valued brand in Management education. The value is inscribed in each of the brick and substance which can be seen as we enter the premises. Being inside the institute makes you feel distinct and definitely the same aura is carried forward wherever the name goes.
2. College Ranking: The latest Business Standard (and other rankings) place XLRI as third best Management College in India. The rankings matter because still the top-5 or might be top-10 institutes maintains the Brahmin-tag (as in old Indian Caste-system) when we have thousands of Management colleges mushroomed all over India.
3. Professors: This is one of the most-valued advantages which I realized after coming here. The persons teaching here are not just professors but they are scholars and they have devoted their entire life in getting academic excellence. Many of them are part of governing bodies in India and whose statement/ideas matter in the Indian Corporate World and government policies.
And this is the reason, though with long classes and rigor of program, I never realize how the time flies in the lectures.
I remember our preparatory courses, I bite my fingers in wonder that how well a concept can be explained and how efficiently a question can be answered by the professors.
Definitely this is one of the best dimensions of being here which can’t be matched in most of other 1-year MBA courses.
4. One of the Established One Year Course: The XL-GMP course was well-started a decade back when XLRI started to educate executives from Tata Steel and Tata Motors. And then GMP was branded as one of the first 1-year MBA courses in India for 5+ experienced . The gist is 1 year GMP course is evolved and definitely time has helped in gradually optimize course as per the needs of Managers and Industry.
5. Full Value of Money: Leaving a high-paying job and paying the college-fee doubles the opportunity cost of the 1-year MBA courses. However GMP course-fee is still on the lower side due to its rationale fee-amount and the facilities. The total-fee of XLRI-GMP comes out to be atleast 40% lower than other pioneer 1 year MBA courses in India. This enhances the ROI of the MBA and one will be able to repay the loan sooner.
6. Course-Pedagogy: MBA-pedagogy is divided in Case-Based approach and team-based approach. One place Harvard takes the former route, Queens, Canada takes the later one. In XLRI, we are fortunate to have both of the approaches for our studies. Classes are divided in smaller groups (and the groups are organized with different people for different courses) and most of the studies are done on case-studies. So Case-based approach helps in talking the real-time life scenarios and team-based approach helps us in understanding different industries and enhancing cross-functional experience.
7. Excellent Facilities: To get into agreement with me on this, you have to come here. The GMP hostels are piece of art with wonderful maintenance and lodging/fooding facilities.

I can keep on talking the above and more. But in the benefit of concise-writing concept, I stop here.

One thing which I very well understand that GMP is an under-advertised highly-valued course (with lower P/E (Price to Earning)* ratio in Market terms) in comparison to other 1-year Indian MBA courses.

P/E Ratio:
It is a financial ratio used for valuation: a higher P/E ratio means that investors are paying more for each unit of net income, so the stock is more expensive compared to one with lower P/E ratio.

One Year Indian MBA: Basics

My decision of going for an MBA at this stage came to wonders for many of my colleagues and friends.
Recently married and current recession-turmoil when many among us are fighting to keep his job, I am contemplating going to a management-school. And then some of my friends really never thought that this could be an option as well to do a not-very costly one-year MBA in India.

Apart from answering my friend’s queries, I thought it would be a good idea to pen down my knowledge or ideas related to a MBA-preparation.

Note down, most of European MBA-courses are 1-year in length and American MBAs are traditionally 2-year in length.

One year MBA in India is a not a very old concept and I should say that ISB, Hyderabad was the pioneer and initiator of the concept in country. ISB became popular in very short time due to branding, placement-focus and methodologies to reach to the Indian corporate interests.

The same inspired IIM-A, XLRI, IIM-C, SP-Jain to catch the young executives who look to upgrade themselves in a batch different than that of freshers or 1-2 years experienced, getting into these reputed schools through CAT.

Now if we see, there is a huge demand of 1-year MBA courses, leading the pack ISB, IIM-A, XLRI, IIM-C, SP-Jain, IIM-L (Noida Campus), IMT-Ghaziabad, IIM-I, MDI and GreatLakes. Most of these colleges allow only 5+ years experience guys to apply for course.

Let’s see what the requirements are in general for these courses:

1. Qualifying Score: Though all of these colleges take GMAT as the qualifying examinations, some of the colleges do consider CAT (XAT in case of XLRI) score as well. There is no qualifying score as this is not the only criteria for securing a place. GMAT is Graduate Management Aptitude Test with maximum marks equals to 800 and has global recognition to take admission in foreign colleges MBAs.

For an IT-guy, I would say 680 is an average score and anything 700+ is a good score when one thinks for a top-college MBA. However, I have seen guys with 770 getting rejected in top-Indian colleges while few of candidates with a 650 also managed to get a place.

So note down that GMAT score is not the only criteria.

2. Work Experience: Most of the top-1-year MBA programs do consider the guys with 5+ years experience. So think to take this way, after completion of atleast 5-years in job/industry. (Till you feel that you are an exceptional candidate)

Suggestion to IT-guys, have some distinction in resume. IT-applicants come from a very common pool and MBA-AdCom looks for a versatile batch. If you are an IT techie then expectations are higher.

Briefly, one needs to have an impressive profile to talk about it in interviews and Essays.

3. Essays: This is the third important thing. The number of essays varies between 3 and 7 and generally the essays try to skim candidate’s personality, attitude, success-stories, strong and weak points. Some of common type of Essay topics: What is your career goal? Or Where do you want to see yourself after 5 years? Or How does the institute MBA suits to your career-plans? Or What is your biggest accomplishment till date?

These essays submission require at the time of filling admission-forms to decide on interview shortlist and in some cases after the short-listing.

4. Recommendation: All of the foreign colleges and most of Indian colleges look for recommendation from supervisors. These supervisors can be from your current or past jobs. Candidate has to enter two or three supervisors (or recommenders) name and email-ids while filling application-form. Generally, the format along with the questions is passed to recommender in mails or the downloadable formats are required to be sent to Ad-com directly from the recommender mail-box.

5. Interview: This is the final-step before getting an offer or decline. Not all the guys are shortlisted for interviews and this shortlist-exercise for interview is done on basis of points 1-4 as discussed above. However, this is the last and most important step so needs complete preparation. Interview pattern and area differs from college to college, from interviewer to interviewer and from year to year.

Seed of MBA and my strategy

While in Engineering, I saw some of top-brains of batch seriously planning for a Post-Graduation/Masters degree. However I was totally confidant of my LIMITED capabilities and NOT-sufficient speaking skills even with a tag of one of the academic topper of my batch.

I took the limitations as an alibi and did hold down all my preparations of PG. However, inside me, there was zeal to get into Post-graduation.
Next, I always had a dream of being in top college. Giving a narrow miss to IIT-JEE (I was placed in IIT Extended Merit-list), I wanted to do Masters from a reputed college.
Joining in TCS and resulted US-trip boosted this dream. I equipped myself in the areas where I was lagging like:

1. Improved my Communication Skills:
Apart from work, I joined ToastMasters International for their weekly meeting. For the people who don't know about Toastmasters, please go to:

I took their sessions and members feedback to refine my language. Check for any local club near to you and don’t hesitate in investing some time in it.

2. Took Project Management experience:
I was lucky to get an opportunity to lead a Project-team at Onsite and Offshore. Being a single-point contact for team helped me a lot in setting goals for myself and for my team as well.

3. Having a stamp on Passport and International Experience:
An MBA-profile with an international experience really helps. Note down Management-colleges want to see a versatile batch as well as guys with versatile backgrounds in term of locations, clients and industries.

4. Community Service Activities:
I got the CSR-lead position for local chapter of my company. I was able to take the accomplishment to new heights and so earned repeated recommendation for my job. I was able to highlight this achievement of mine in most of MBA-essays and interviews.

5. Think Out-of-box:
Generally the MBA-colleges like the people who think different. Like for example, a person with a starting venture experience and lower GMAT can get an admit more easily than a guy, with higher GMAT, who has spent his same length of time in a reputed company. This was the main reason, I went ahead joining a start-up company of 20+ employees from a 1,00,000 employee company.
This start-up experience was immense valuable for me in term of knowledge of organization dynamics, setting up a company and other factors required to grow in a corporate.

Had I been in my old employer, I would have never learnt these facts. I am not saying that these factors were coversing for my average GMAT-score but these were of help.
In many MBA-fairs (like from topmba.com), I have seen colleges talking about GMAT not the only thing to secure a seat in top-MBA. That's true: GMAT score is not the sole thing but it is the most important thing to secure a place.
So take GMAT seriously as first step, and then work on other areas which you can highlight in Essays and during admission interviews.

Rinku Singh Rahi is working as District Social Welfare Officer, Muzaffarnagar (U.P.), Shot with Six bullets on 26th March, 2009 by local mafia at the behest of some corrupt officials of his department as he had reported accounting discrepancies worth Crores of Rupees to higher authorities. However, he survived the murderous attempt and recuperating at Subharti Hospital, Merrut (U.P.) but lost one eye. Rinku also wrote a letter to the Director of his department, highlighting prevalent corruption in the department..

This incident should be a slap on local Govt who projects themselves contractor of society and divides it on basis of caste and religion.
This guy, who happens to be shot six times including one in head, was abducted before once. He had given a notice to Govt saying that his life is in danger.

In his letter to UP Govt, he clearly outlines his struggle till-date and his willingness to give resignation in case of no help from local-govt and administration.

He continues his battles and finally becomes a victim of anti-social elements.
It shows how much easy is to get law into hand for local mafiaas. It shows how easy is to shot a Govt Officer (of District Level Rank) in a dominant society.
Definitely this is not the single case for the state, sometime back another UP PWD Engineer Manoj Gupta was allegedly beaten to death by MLA of Aurariya after Gupta failed to meet their extortion demand on December 23 last year.

Rinku was a state-level Class-I Officer and he tried to put the things straight by ordering probe in government welfare schemes.
What was the rewards, losing one eye and getting shot six times and a hospital-bed.
Clearly it calls for state government to prove its point of being MESSIAAH of Dalit Welfare Schemes. If they are what they say then respected CM should bring the issue in her personal attention and get the culprit behind the bars.
Rather than doing MP-calculations and dreaming for PM-chair, she along with state machinery should justify Rinku's sacrifice.

This guy Rinku is our batch-mate and we have seen his willingness to serve the common purpose for society. We know him well that he can not go wrong and can not tilt towards evil. He was one of the beneficiary of Welfare Schemes and so he took the post of Distt Welfare Office through UPPSC after completing Engineering from NIT Jamshedpur, one of the premier Engineering Colleges of India.

What is his fault..to perform his duties earnestly or to highlight the corruption in his department?

Who can answer? Government, Police or we....

Time to Move on...

However, the context seems to fit our national anthem. There are more than many examples of the national anthem getting into controversies. From the advent of the 'Jana Gana Mana..' in 1911 when Tagore is said to written this in praise of George-V, the anthem has made into News for many of the wrong reasons.

Irony is: the national anthem refers to 'Sindh' as a part of India whereas Sindh is in Pakistan post-1947-division and there is no mention of Kashmir which we claim to be an Integral part of our country.

The Bengali tone can be easily felt and it does not go well with non-Bengali speakers. In addition to these, now the latest flak of anthem appeared courtesy RGV.
He re-worded the anthem to "Jana gana mana rann hai ... iss rann mein zakhmi hua hai Bharat ' and used the new lyrics in his movie title song. But the protectionist and censor board claim the act to be of disrespect and violation of national anthem.

Agreed to the ban but does it not call to make ourselves more flexible? Why should we hold a 100 years old legacy so firmly? Indians were able to change their Flag, lives, industries and economic policies. Then why are we so reluctant to change our Anthem?

There are many options from 'Vande Matram' to Iqbal's 'Sare Jahan se Acha' to AR Rahman patriotic composures. Moreover, we can go for open entries where we can use country creativity and ideas to evolve into a new anthem.

Finally, if not replacement then definitely it's time to re-tune or re-word some of the paras and make the anthem more effective and reachable to common masses.

Same way, what is point of still having Hockey as our national Game when 80% of the population prefers to watch Cricket over Hockey, when most of the sportsman dream of being a Cricketer than a Hockey-player and when India is better-known as a Cricket-player country than Hockey playing country.
Time to Move On...isn't it??

A million dollars idea evolved with Bush Iraq visit...
The idea to lodge a protest in a unique way.
Though a country from Mesopotamia River Civilization had not given much to World politics (contrary to Roman, Chinese and Indus-civilization) but the unique style of throwing SHOE is well-originated in Iraq.

Showing the sole of shoes or throwing shoes are seen as a sign of contempt in most of the cultures and Muntadar-al-Zaidi wrote a hero in himself by the stunning act. Thanks to him for giving a new dimension to existing concept.

Not to wonder, Indian society, where respect and reputation are integral part, quickly adapted the method. And in a very short span of time, the idea became a contagious hit. No one is spared, PC Chidambram, Naveen Jindal, film-actor Jitendra, Advani and now poor Prime-Minister.

Not sure how many are still to be added in this list. I read there are some regions, where people have started 'Joota Maaro Aandolan' (Shoe Hitter Movement).

Nonetheless, politicians are getting the attendees bare-footed before joining rallies or getting an extra shoe-protector fence between them and people.

If the same continues, days are not far that leaders, who will get their men throwing shoes on their face, will later say that I am being the shoe-targets so now I am popular like Advani and Manmohan.

Given 3 out of 5 phases of General Election still remaining in country, there could be many more smaller or bigger incidents in the making and many of them might go unreported now due to lack of something new...

Widely adapted idea diminishes the value of the idea.

My appeal to all the future shoe-throwers: Its time to device a new idea rather than adapt the existing idea of throwing shoe/sandals/chappals.

Not being protectionist (in term of ideas), we Indians would feel good to see an aboriginal, in-country generated idea to raise a protest: different than hurling a shoe.

If you are working in India: Pune is a place to be

Since long we as colleagues kept fighting on the Best Indian cities: to be, to work and to spend lives. For major time, I were with Gultis (Term used for Andhra-guys in Indian Engineering Colleges) and so like my friends, I believed Hyderabad to be a great place to be, especially for IT-professionals.

However, recent career-move to India gave me a chance to be in Pune for more than a year and at this juncture, I could very well say that it is one of the best cities in India to be and to spend the working life.

Why?

Here is the answer:

1. Non-capital City: This unique distinction separates Pune from any other major comparable cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Chandigarh. Being not-a-capital keeps Pune aloof from political activities, rallies and unwanted demonstrations. Take an example, Singur frenzied activities made Kolkata hot, Raj Thakrey statements paralyzed Mumbai for weeks and similarly LTTE-SriLanka issue made Chennai epic-center of the political furnace. But one can find a very rare similar example for Pune.

2. Weather: Even after global warming and continuous uprooting of trees, still the weather of city is affable. The pleasant evenings, not too-cold winters and drizzling rainy seasons in City can be only compared with same in Bangalore. But definitely Bangalore scores lesser than Pune in term of traffic-congestion.

3.Geographical Location: Being 2.5 hours away from Mumbai gives Puneites a unique opportunity to be connected to all the country-level activities without being amidst Mumbai-hassles. All the national and international flights are connected in a distance of 2.5 hours and so all the interviews, seminars and exhibitions are accessible in a distance of 150-200 kms.

4. Weekend Gateways: With Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Shirdi, Lonavala, Alibaug and Ratnagiri type of weekend-gateways, Pune scores higher than any other comparable cities in India. There is a huge scope of Adventure and Sports in near-by areas, be it rafting or hill-climbing or para-sailing.

5. An Educational Hub: With Symbiosis, Law college, FTII and many other group of institutes, Pune has a large young crowd so it adds to the freshness of the society.

6. Automobile and IT-hub: The small-scale industries in BIDC, MIDC, Automobile clusters and major IT-companies development-center present a well-educated and motivated crowd in the city. The huge working population adds to the glamour of city well.

Overall, after being here for a year, I almost fell in love with the city. The Beautification for CYG-20008 and very proactive corporate-body of PMC and PCMC have done good job in last few years in term of development. Hope to see the same pace of changes in city along with changing world.

On 11th March 09, A 17 years old student in Germany kills about 10 of his schoolmates.

700 policemen and 7 helicopters came into action to handle the situation....within 7 minutes of shooting....World-wide media covered the incident with pics, videos and special news-flash...

Same day, on the other side of World, in Bihar on the occassion of Holi, half dozen of people got killed (and 24 injured) in separate clashes.

Bihar Police terms these clashes as regular and deshi media is busy enough to ignore it....

No one knows about the Bihar incident....not even many people living in next city in same state...

Raju Anna: Short Term and Long Term Goals...

I never expected that CEO Ramalinga Raju will be of so much of interest. As much as I am hearing about him, it makes me wonder on his brain.

Come on man....you can be a role model for Charles Sobhraj. But the only thing, Raju may not as lucky as Charles Sobhraj: to be so lucky to repeat the scam once again. Remember, Charles Sobhraj repeated his MAGIC after dodging the police multiple times...

Coming back to Raju: the next news (followed by Raju land-deals and inter-family transfer of money) : Raju is alleged to have 1000+ suits, 300+ shoes and 300+ belts.

(This explains NO rise in Satyamites salary for last two years..isn't it. So next time, your salary in not getting an increment, make sure of checking your CEO wardrobe.... :-) )

Anyway, the 1000 suits means: after Satyam inception in 1987, in last 20-years he bought 50-suits per year and so it comes to 1 suit per week..Gosh...

(This is on assumption that he has suits from 20-years back which is highly unlikely..)

And then 300+ belts, all the working day, Raju could wear one different one...I guess most of Satyamites will not be having 5-belts even to have a different-one on each-working day...:-(

Last time, I heard someone on a similar track, was Jayalalitha (the Tamilnadu AIDMK Chief) who got 10,000 sarees and 1000 pair of sandles ..(and ofcourse I am not accounting for her Cars and Gold-Jewelleries/Bangles)

I guess Raju would have taken 2-3 more years to cross her.

Or no...being from Hyderabad, I guess he must be trying to emulate Nizzams...

So if SEBI asks Raju (as part of its interrogation session): 'What is your short term and long term goals?'

Slum dog Millionaire (SDM): A movie based on novel 'Q & A' from Visas Startup. The novel starts with "I am in jail for winning 2M in 'Who Wants to be Millionaire' (the original version of Kaun Banega Caurorepati)'.

The movie serves an intriguing story which will make your eyes to ballonize and mouth to agape. Many of the scenes, you will feel like closing your eyes for few moments. And finally there might be a touching impact on you which will get you think about the movie, about the protagonist and about the depicted incidents.

The last time when I had similar feeling was after seeing 'Mr and Mrs Iyer'. That one also nicely drew the picture of hatredness and other inhuman characteristics of Indian society. Both were story of a common man but note down that common man will be very uncommon for other-than-Indian society. Yes, these are the stories only applicable for India due to peculiar classism, regionalism, style of Police-Investigation and killing-temperament in our societies.

Fine coming on SDM: It is a story of a boy (named Jamaal) who loses his mother during a riot, a boy who could not complete his schools (and had to guess the third characters name from his book-story '3-Muskeeters' during the show), a boy who loves a similar victimized girl, a boy who gets saved by his elder brother, Salim on multiple occasions and a boy who later gets kicked out of the house by same Salim for the gal whom Jamal loved.

The screen moves from here to there to reason the answers given by Jamaal while he is on the 'Who Wants to be Millionaire' show. No-one including the host of the show, believes that how a 'Call Center Chai-wala' (remember not a call-center employee, its chai-wala) can know the answers. Ultimately the host hands over the boy to the Police to investigate any probable manipulation.

The boy tells his stories, his ordeals and his struggle that enabled him to answer all the questions on the show and win till the last question for which he has to go to the show very next show. His reasoning make him to come clean and the Police had to let him for the final question in next show. The last question turns out to be something, he had to guess but he believes that 'It's written' (in destiny). And so he makes a guess to win the show and his lady-love eventually.

Overall, a must-watch widely acclaimed movie, directed by Danny Boyle/Lavleen Tondon; you got to see the movie...

Somdev Golden Run..Making of Male Sania Mirja

Finally there is something to cheer after Satyam fiasco. 202-seeded Somdev has stormed to Chennai-Open and kept alive his chances to win the first ATP Singles Title.

A Univ of Virginia Graduate and winner of collegiate tournament NCAA, Somdev seems to have many surprises to be unfolded.

What I liked about him that he gave priority to his degree because he felt special to get a degree from Univ of Virginia. He awaited till right time and now he is creating wonders in Tennis.

Long time back, in one of Interviews, he mentioned that he would like to play in India and for India. This is something else, to impress me and other Indians.

Son of North East Indian parents, Somdev is currently a hearthrobof media now. Especially after reaching to the Chennai Opens Final, there is a long queue of people to get his autograph...

Lets pray that he can do one more wonder tomorrow, 11-Jan-09 and can create history by holding the Chennai Open Trophy.....

And so an Indian sensation of Male Sania Mirja is awaited tomorrow after Chennai-Open....

2008: An End; 2009: A Beginning

The best part with 2008 is that it is over. Starting from alternate months Bomb-blasts to Sensex downslide: there was not much for good memories for India.

You may contradict quoting Chandrayan and IPL but in both of the places, there is nothing for common people. IPL: where the profit either went to BCCI or to Lalit Modi (who coined the Cricket-club franchisees concept) and Chandrayan: where the ISRO can boast of putting an Indian flag on the lunar surface.

What did I and you get from 2008? Some more insecurity and uncertainty about all of our lives. People are more scared in going out, leave a trip to something interesting but even to next street Shopping-mall.

Definitely, we did not see any betterment in number of causalities in road-accidents in India or people falling and dying from local Mumbai-trains. However this number zoomed-up with an increase in terror-strikes, bomb-blasts and Naxalites growing presence.

The number of blasts is really unprecedented. Alternate month 13th and 26th..but the cities keep changing... No wonder my wife first check the calendar to make sure that it should not be 13th or 26th before we plan to leave the home.

So what good part of the year that it has to be better than last year even if it is bad. We have Kasab in Mumbai jail, P Chidambram in the helm of Home Minister, Obama in charge of the most powerful country and New General Election to be notified in India.

Things ought to be better with the job-market and economy getting some acceleration. Aaamin....

Hindi Movies Name follow names of Heroes. Like movie Don was named after SRK character-name and Rocky movie was named after Sanjay Dutt’s character Rocky. And there could be many examples as ‘Ajay’, ‘Mr India’ and many more. But first time, I found a movie name on the Villain name in the movie. Distinct…….huh???

So movie Ghajini is named on the villain ‘GHAJINI’ who is the one and only target of our hero Aamir and his vengeance .

After watching the pre-paid show on the evening before day of release, I realized the movie was very much in Kollywood(Tamil Movie Industry) lines: Action, Art of Story-telling and Violence. Long time back, I saw a Tamil movie named ‘Khaka-Khaka’, (with Surya as ACP AnbuSelvam and Jyotika as Maya) a similar story-type when the cursor moves from flashback to present and so forth.

So you can easily find an origin of Ghajini if you have seen some of Kollywood movie. But the difference lies in Aamir intense acting. He didn’t disappoint his fans like me. Though there is no suspense but there was not even a single moment in the show to think away from the movie.

Asin looked gracious and undoubtedly, she never looked ignorable while sharing space on screen with Aamir. One more to add in Mallu beauty pool in Bollywood after Genelia. Nishabda-famed hot-hot Jia Khan has done little work in movie but no complaints from her.

Movie has strong sequences of scenes and two of the scenes even scared hell out of me. One: When the Police Inspector falls in Aamir’s house and Second: When Aamir appears before Jia Khan from latter hostel-room window. Though whole of movie deserves an ‘A’ from censor board due to violence and intense fighting scenes, I would never mind seeing the movie again.

However, I will not be a strong recommender to others but if you have a heart then go-ahead, movie will leave an impact for some time.

Musicwise, I felt it average till I saw the movie. For today on 25^th Dec, 08. I am a non-stop listener of ‘Khwaish’, ‘Kaise Mujhe’ and ‘Behka’…

The crowd energy on the eve before release was on the peak and I guess the movie did not disappoint any of them.

So be a brave and go for it…

The current market trend is really hurting especially for IT-professionals. The recruitment is frozen, campus-placement has zeroed down and salary-increment is on all-time low.

So how to deal such situations:

1. Do Networking: Networking is well-known tool to progress professionally. MBA-grads and students from abroad colleges mostly rely on this idea to land into a new jobs. However, Networking can fit well for IT job-search. Take help from your college alumni and then most of the companies rely on the Referral scheme for new recruitment. Networking comes handy here as well.
2. Upgrade yourself: Tough time teaches a lot. While you have been handed a pink-slip or while you are on bench then use your time to acquaint with new technologies and market-trends. You can also think of changing your vertical like a telecom firm to manufacturing firm. So take some time out to decide what fascinates you or what seems more interesting to you. Think where do you slack-off and fix your flaws.
3. Establish a Professional Blog: Many recruiters keep an eye on blog-sites and go for guys who show mettle in blogs. Even creating a profile on linkedln will be a good idea as there are more than 30-million people professionally connected on linkedln.
4. Participate in Forums: Again this is the place where big-guys from company pick the talents. Your reply for the posted articles and questions can create a positive impact on such recruiter to pick the correct talent.
5. Get Creative: Standing out from crowd will help in such scenarios. Carry a business card which you can share with straightforward title as ‘An experienced ERP-consultant’ or ‘a professional job-seeker’. It’s important to be likable by others. Create a video-resume on job-sites will be another creative approach.

Last Weekend, I were in my alma-mater. After a long span of SIX years, going back to college premises where I spent four most learning years, was something not very usual.

Time flies and it has been a wonderful journey especially time after joining Engineering. It was the time from where I started to be on my own, from where I remember myself and from where I know what I am doing.

Journey to college this weekend was most memorable one. Due to strike in Ranchi, I had to take a cab (it was a brand new Indica) to Jamshedpur. Roads were empty and I was fresh after a good sleep in uneventful flight-journey.

Gosh, within 15 minutes of drive from Ranchi, I was amidst greeneries and unforeseen natural beauties. I never thought before that a known place can look so beautiful.

Clear roads, visible water on the stones of road-sided hills and Tree-claded surroundings were producing mystic view. I could see the Dasam Fall, Surya Mandir boards which reminded me of a not-much-known-to-others trip to these places. There was another place named Devdi Temple which made me to submerge in deep thoughts of the fabulous trip that we had in final year.

Then Chandil : where we have Freshers/Farewell Party, Kali Mandir: where each and every passing vehicle had to stop, Water flowing beneath on-road Bridge: where we did Water Rafting just below the bridge in the WHITE Suwarnarekha water.

It was sweet and nostalgic mix of feeling. At one point, I really contemplated going back to those days, which is no more possible.

Those free and timeful days will never be back.

Then entering to Jamshedpur, it did not change much. Payal Talkies are in decrepit state with no charm left anymore. Same Mango Bus Stand and then Sakchi Jubliee Park, I dint see any change. Bistupur was abuzz with new businesses but Amar Market is still there with lesser number of shops.

Fine, I dint expect much to change in city like Jamshedpur but expecting some changes in college should be justified, isnt it?

Going to College, it was the same six seater autos and same jerking roads. Still, one guy like me will prefer to sit in lap of Sidhartha type of guy (who was ready to have one person in lap when there is not much place in Auto) than to sit on the jumping Auto to college.

In summary, roads leading to college were same. No Change in Adityapur Road# 4 and Road# 1 except that time being-table is now well-build SHIV-temple now. College Entrance Gate is there but its dullness does not seem to attract any passers-by. I believe having two black-marble pillars on each side could have added some in its missing charm but sad No here.

Roads in the campus slighter in the positive side than what we had but AD-building looked same. Colorless and with black patches, there is no change still though we can see a Computer Center and a manless Digital Library Buildings in side.

All the Departments have got their boards but inside there is not much to brag about. My questions from the students made me feel that in the last six years were not enough to change the college.

I felt not so great and then permissible time did not give me chance to go to Hostels.

Yes, there was one visible change, there were more gals than what we had. All of them in traditional Indian dresses and did not attract me. Briefly, there were none striking in my limited encountered of College gals.

One more thing, though college Dabba (Bus) have changed their look but the only STATIONARY SHOP in corner, is same with the same owning people and with same type of things inside. (probably only change they had, is they have got some Veg Puffs to offer along with Cold Drinks)

Overall, though the number and percentage of people getting offers in hand is increases, there is not much to cheer about the change from RIT to NIT.

Relationships: Smart Moves

I remember one of my junior saying that I love a girl. Then I ask him, Oh Good, does she love you?
He says, yes she does so much but she is not ready to get married. I continue the talk..why so?
He replies, her family is not ready to get her married to me and she is not ready to go against her family.

Generally people may think, what a tragedy...though they love each-other and they want to get married but they can not.
How pity on the duo?

But the reality which I realized late...its not family but its the other person who is hiding her unwillingness to get married to him in the hope of getting a better guy. Though she might be deluding her lover-(or so called friend guy in her language)-but she gives more importance to her well-being rather than being with him.

In this case, she tries to convince the guy ..see hon..I will have to loose everyone if I will marry you. But if we dont then we could be like friends forever...dont create an issue or we will loose each-other forever....
The looser guy dont have a wayout...even after doing his best and giving the best service possible for a long time to his sincere love, gives up after some convincing.
Sometime the looser guy turn to be Devdas and sometime they snap-off all the relations with others till they recover.

A lesser number of times but it can happen in other ways as well. Some clever guys sometime ditch their gfs saying my mother will not approve me of marrying me....after spending some good couple of months or years with his gal.

So in this case, gal or guy whoever is in the smarter side, enjoy the good time with other and in meantime have enough mental strength to accept a new and better opportunity.

Who is the loser?
Loser is the person who is not ready to move without the other-one.

So in the mature world, where gals or guys have so much of freedom and they prefer to enjoy without a nuptial relationship, one need to be planned and beware of all outcomes.

Pre-marital relations: Be smart and dont get dependent on anyone so that her or his absence can harm your present in any ways...even if it is love, first plan together and then take your dives in the safe and sweet sea of Love.

Its reminding me of a Hindi quotation:

Maturity

One of my precious friend says, 'people think that she is not matured' and she is more treated like a kid rather than like a grown person in group.

She asked me WHY and I did not know the answer.

Sometimes I wondered, what is the reason though she understands like anyone. She is good in anticipating things and talking to people. She knows what and when to talk and she does not hurt others when she talk to others.

Yes, her emotional quotient might be a bit high but that is not everything on which anyone can decide for maturity.

Question which is restless in my mind: How do we define maturity?

Then I saw a silverlining in my thoughts. Though still am not very sure (as I have never met her physically), whether I will have the same opinion about her on meeting her but I figured out three-four criteria which is widely used in defining mature people.

1. Maturity is defined in society as degree of correctness of behaving as per situation. 'Generally-matured-termed' persons do not overreact, neither emotionally nor physically.

2. A mature person need to think on other terms. He or She does not bring 'his or her principles and rules' in the way to understand others view. This will lead a Mature person to more balanced approach to anyone opinions or actions.

3. A lot of flexibility and adaptability to be on terms on people around.

4. Suitable Judgement and convincing power.

5. Sometimes, 'A Mature People' seems to be synonym of 'A Good Listener'. Others can not term you as a mature person if you dont have the capability to listen to others. In place of speaking more, a mature person need to give compatible-others equal or more chance to speak.

6. Maturity means dependability even in a crisis. It is the ability to make a decision even in adverse times and stand by it.

Apart from the above criteria: self-profit consciousness, basic etiquettes and as-per situation manners are general other obvious requirements which are equally required to be a Good-Human-Being which are not worth-mentionable here.

My Carelessness and Stupidity

It was a wierd morning courtesy my stupidity and carelessness.
Though in morning, I did not get-up feeling so well and fresh but I was not so bad that I cpuld not identify the correct bus.

It happens with me quite often (appreciate my modesty). Boarding into wrong light rail happened with me twice in last two months.

So today morning, I had to take Bus or Light Rail or combination as of my expired DL. I tried to be on time and came to Bus Stop.
I was destined to take bus# 79 and same time, bus# 73 arrived. Many deshi guys were boarding and so did I thinking that these guys must be travelling to work like any other TCSer to downtown.

The confidence increased when I saw another gal of my acquaintance, who works in same office as I do, riding the same bus .
I went and took one of the last seat where this gal was not visible but other deshi guys were definitely next to me.

After a long ride of 25 minutes, I saw all deshi guys getting down and I did the same thinking that, it is the place, where I can take Light Rail to Downtown (my office).

'Holy Cow', it was somewhere else, far from all the ways leading to downtown.

I searched for that gal but she was nowhere. I realized that she must have gone down after one stop of boarding with me.

I felt helpless, I felt like how the hell I can do that?
How could be I so careless?

I knew very well that I am good in such bad things, and it proved that again.

After another hour of struggle, I managed to come to office. Thankfully, I did not miss any meeting but it took one and half hour in travelling the 40 minutes commute.

Sometime I really worry that if people would be thinking me of absent-minded, it is justified. Or more than it, I should be judged careless.

I guessed by starting that this day is gonna bad (Early morning predicts the day) but till now day is not so bad as I expected it.

Dont know, what else is there in womb of time for my today evening.
But lesson learnt is, before boarding the bus/train, verify where it is destined to?

Haggard, Laggard and Reluctant to change

Getting bored and feeling so sleepy in office. Sometime I dream that my Manager walks to my place and asks me 'What you are working on these days?' Definitely, I dont have any answer clearly and try to take him on a round.

Dream continues... " When I fail then he goes back to his office, calls me and says that he might think of releasing me as there is not much in current project which can be assigned to me."

It scares me and causes me to shiver. Why sometime, I behave so ignorant and sometime I do not feel like working. Like most of us, when I work good and complete something, the sense of accomplishment cheers me but not always I am in mood to work.

I am kind a fed up with my existing work. There is not much change in last two years, a little variation with high monotonous ingredients. But I wonder how much is it true? Sometime, I want to hop a step forward and give a try to get some more work or to push the clients to let us venture in new areas. But I do not want to come out of the comfort zone. Do not want to take additional burden.

There is a feeling that very soon, I will be out of this mesh, might be in country or anywhere else. Priorities in the life is changing with time. I prefer using my little knowledge in more knowledgable way and skip from learning.

'Multitasking is Myth' and following this, I infer that I can not do well by concentrating on other-than-work things during office. So the best outcome would be when I can be single-minded for my work during office hours and give the output at maximum.

Or no wonder, one day the dream which I mentioned in start, will come true though may be in slightly different way.

Provoked....induce to revenge...

PROVOKED.....dictionary takes this word to exasperate, stir up, resentment, to induce....blab blab....The word was not so familiar to me till today when I saw the movie with the word as Title. Starred by no other big cast than Aishwarya Roy (Miss World 1994), the movie portraits a true story from Kiranjeet Ahulawali autbiography named 'The Circle of Light'.

It starts with the climax(the story moves to and forth of backflash and present), when one lady sets her husbad on fire. The careless guy lying full-dressed on the bed, probably would have realized very late that its very late.

First one hour, protagonist Kiran looked traumatic, speechless but NOT apologistic. There is no sign of redemption after setting her husband to the death pyre. And then the movie goes with her vivid memories showing her marriage to sufferings. The many incidents justifies her act of revenge and then it tells story of her fight to acquittal.

Aishwarya is in one of her the best. I always wonder for her immense expressions (apart from her big, speaking eyes). Being from Manglore Tulu-speaking region, she has got unexceptional talent which she showcased in all the regional movies apart from Hindi.

Be it a Tamil village girl in Kandukonden Kandukonden or a Bengali girl inRainCoat or Gujrati giggling beauty in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (one of my all time favorite) or a Punjabi lady in Provoked, she excels in all. I could not imagine of anyone who could replace her in such characters.

Okay, movie impacted me due to some of the scenes and some other reasons. Post marital abuse is not very uncommon in India where gals worship their husband as God and learns to dissolve their identity after marriage in Husband identity. In most of such cases, they prefer to be silent and succumb to the conditions.

But the story defies to attack, to hit back because in such aconditions, you do not have anything to loose that is everything else will be better than present. When it is beyond limit then you could be provoked to give a period to everything in your way. Just parting the way is not the solution but there is something called Revenge for the torture which you went through.

Some of the scenes are very much appealing when she learns English so that she can present her case and story to people. Being a nice girl helps her in prision but still it is not enough till she learns English with some white cell-mates and get enough courage to justify her act.

The movie can overall create a sense of unsecurity in the gals going to get married. Normally apprehensive about marital life, they can get more reasons but in mean time the movie gives solution to them as well.

Solution to end everything without a fear of final result. Being once convicted is better than being that daily. Apart from this, the message is clear to all the guys ,who tend to control their wives as part of typical Indian culture, that beware of counter-attack.

Though movie might not be acclaimed widely but it is a nice try to set a benchmark for Hindi Cinema and to take Bollywood to more realistic world.

Kudos to Aishwarya acting and whole film-crew (nay to mention regular splendid acting by Nandita Das)!!!

Give a try to movie when your heart is calm and set on peace....!!

Definition of Success

How do we define the term SUCCESS??

This is one of the most eternal and forever-existing question for me. Since the time, when I got senses, I always tried to evaluate each of my action to find out whether it will lead me to the road of success or not.

It was always confusing and changing very constantly. As a school-student and as a part of banking-industry dominated family, I always thought getting a job in Bank is all what it needs to be successful.

However this of my idea ended into smoke when I happened to meet guys around and realize the craze of specilization of Engineering or Medical like things. Then I decided to become an aspirant of Engineering as most of the good scorer in the batch opted for .

Got into Engineering, not in the best one, but one to be happy about. I thought this is what I need to succeed. Now in the flow, I will reach to destination without any special efforts.

But later, I comprehended that you need to perform to be in the list of successful living beings of batch. And the most important criteria for getting into this list is something termed as 'Campus Placement'.

Geared up and thought, once this is done, its all done. I just need to get into a good company and live life in HUKUNA-MATATA (take it easy) way ever after that. But it did not happen. Event after getting into second company for my batch was not enough. Now even when you got to earn, there is something called performing in group, in team, in batch so that you can travel to onsite(anywhere outside India and earn in dollars) sooner.

Performed, got the good feedback, including Employee of Month, many appreciations and then finally an onsite opportunity. I thought now it should be an end, earn some money and then go back home. Get some flat and settle after that.

But again it was a mirage, the new wave of ambitions started to hit. Being a good performer in work and outside office was not enough and then I realized there is something else which we need to do to get into list of achievers.

Now trying to do that, but am afraid whether will that give an end to the search of Success.

One thing, which I learn that SUCCESS is very relative term and it is defined by the way how the people next to you, are performing.

I am still trying to find the light at end of tunnel and chasing the others definition of SUCCESS because I do not have my definition.

To approach an idea in planned way...

Adding one more blog and am afraid that I will get a addiction to blogging.

Whatever, the thing which I learnt today is to approach an idea in a diplomatic way. Approaching in more reasonable way where you can give your reasons and arguments (provided people are capable and willing to understand).

It should not be like 'Bhaish ke aage bin bajaye aur bhaish rahi paugrai'. So I intend to say that you need proper ideaor focuss to approach and then you can convince people.

Morning I had a shock and felt helpless on knowing that someone is forcing their needs, greivances and desires on me (or rather than us). I felt helpless that I can not argue them with due respect. I accpeted whatever they said without any nodding.
That was to avoid them making feel bad and losing the impression.

Then I focused and decided to approach in a phase by phase. One thing is that you need to decide what do you want. And if you are clear then you get strength to work towards that. This is called 'FOCUS'.

Then I started to approach the people who can influence the decision. In place of attacking directly, I decided to talk whom I can convince and who are more reasonable (and less respectable). This could be termed as 'PEOPLE'.

It was easy to convince them and I was lucky that it did not take much time. And now these poeple have my request in their backhead to destroy the original idea from its source. So it helps to approach in a phased way and one more thing never show your back from helping people, you never know whom help will be required any time. This is called 'APPROACH'.

Very well said, 'Never slam a door in anger, which you may have to open later'...

The lesson learnt is 'Break the problem in smaller pieces and then attack one by one'.

Finally I succumbed to the appeal of blog. And inadvertently, I decided to search on some good sites which have enough storage capacity to store individual crap.

I read a couple of these from my friends. Generally which I liked because that enables people to express themselves and make them more transparent and understandable.

But the apprehension which was there inside me, was the others feeling. How will they take my opinions? What if it hurts them? What if they find me weak and try to take advantage of it?

Those all things burning inside me, made me to believe on my diary, my diary which I keep with me, next to my bed or rather next to me so that it could be inaccessible to unwanted living beings.

I remembered, it was my school days, when I got proper dose of scoldings (but it was not enough and reasonable to make me feel wrong) from my respectable parents and I vented up my frustration on my anger.

2-3 years down the line, it came into light through my sister who is so candid to hide anything. And I felt so embarassed that I had to tear-down the pages to end those writing in dust.

I love writing with my limited capability and I kept continued my diary writing. In school, college, in home, outside the home, in between friends and among them all.

Another fine day, I jotted down one of my crush and got caught by my bro. Though he was wise and good enough to hide everything, it again made me fool stupid. I ended up in tearing down those papers again.

The last instance happened during my work when one of my friend, found my inaccessible diary within her reach and then that made her so much cry that I started to doubt the reasoning behind maintaining diary.

And now after a long break, in my solace, I am trying to rely on something which will be open to all. And will help me in my loneliness and hollowness.
